Hazmat Physical Exams
HAZWOPER physicals are mandatory baseline exams for employees on HAZMAT teams, those exposed to hazards above OSHA limits, or workers wearing respirators ≥ 30 days/year. Administered before, during, and after assignments, they evaluate your medical history, respiratory fitness, and overall ability to safely work in heavy personal protective equipment (PPE).

Required Medical Components
To comply with OSHA’s medical surveillance requirements (29 CFR 1910.120), the physical routinely includes:

Comprehensive Health History: A detailed review of your occupational and medical history, focusing on past exposures.

Physical Examination: Baseline checks of vital signs, eyes, ears (audiometric testing), chest, and abdomen.

Pulmonary Function Test (PFT/Spirometry): Measures lung capacity and function to ensure you can safely wear a respirator.

Laboratory Work: Blood and urine samples to check for baseline metabolic function or signs of prior overexposure.

Additional Diagnostics: Depending on exposure risks, an EKG, chest X-ray, or stress test may be required.

Respirator Fit Testing: Ensures your assigned mask creates a proper seal.
